This is our second separation of the season from Felix Morocho. Felix is a newer producer to our Ecuador project, and this extremely small lot—like every other coffee we source from this region—is full of love and passion. In the cup we find peach, star fruit, and lemongrass.

Hand-picked at peak ripeness. Floated to further remove defects. Held in-cherry overnight. De-pulped. Dry-fermented for 36 hours. Washed. Dried on raised beds until moisture content reaches 10.5%.
We have been drawn to Ecuadorian Mejorado from the beginning of our sourcing journey. This is our first year buying from Felix Morocho, and this is his second harvest pass. Though our experience with Ecuador and the Mejorado varietal goes back years, it remains extremely challenging to build meaningful volume from this project. The quality and profiles, however, make it well worth the effort.
Mejorado is a very unique variety mainly grown in Ecuador. Though it is colloquially known as Typica Mejorado, we now know—thanks to genetic testing by World Coffee Research—that it is actually a Bourbon variety cross-pollinated with an Ethiopian Landrace variety.
The cost of getting a coffee from cherry to beverage varies enormously depending on its place of origin and the location of its consumption. The inclusion of price transparency is a starting point to inform broader conversation around the true costs of production and the sustainability of specialty coffee as a whole.
